Katsouleas, who was selected as president of UConn in February 2019, notified the school’s Board of Trustees that he will resign as president at the end of his current contract, which concludes as of Wednesday, June 30.
Before taking over for Susan Herbst as the 16th president of UConn, Katsouleas served as a vice president and provost of the University of Virginia.
No specific reason for Katsouleas stepping down has been provided, though he reportedly made the decision months ago and could stay at UConn in a different capacity.
“For reasons we have discussed at length over time, I have made the difficult decision to resign my position as President of the University of Connecticut. I appreciate your understanding of my decision,” Katsouleas wrote in a letter to Dan Toscano, chair of the Board of Trustees.
“UConn has fared extraordinarily well in the face of unprecedented challenges under the leadership and decision making of our leadership team and the Board,” he stated. “I look forward to contributing further to the continued success of the state’s flagship institution of higher education as a member of our distinguished faculty.”
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont issued a statement celebrating Katsouleas’s tenure and thanking him for his service.
“He and members of the Board of Trustees agreed that it was time for a change in leadership,” he said. “I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees to find a suitable replacement who shares their vision of growth, and building on its reputation as one of the top public institutions of higher learning in the country.”
